The Chalk River nuclear power plant continues its shut down, estimated to last a minimum of one month. This shutdown impacts the supply of 99MO, which generates the diagnostic isotope Technetium. This isotope is used in diagnostic tests mainly for cardiac disease and some cancers.
St. Joseph's is working with its supplier to determine the amount of isotope that will be available during the Chalk River shutdown. We are also looking at alternative tests for some patients to ensure they receive the care they need.
Our patients are our top priority. A plan is being developed in case we have a limited supply of isotope over a long period of time.
For patients with nuclear medicine appointments, you will be contacted if there is a change in your appointment. Otherwise, please come to your appointment as scheduled.
