Frequently Asked Questions about the Arthritis Institute

Q: What are the Rheumatology Day Programs?

A: The Arthritis Institute web page (http://www.sjhc.london.on.ca/sjh/programs/arthritic/dayprog/day.htm) provides an overview of the available treatment services for Rheumatology patients. For your convenience, it also includes print-ready program brochures and referral forms that you can share with your family doctor.

Q: I think I would benefit from physiotherapy. How do I access your service?

A: In order to be seen at the SJHC Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy Centre, you will require a doctor's referral (from your SJHC Rheumatologist or from your family doctor). The referral form is available on-line; simply print a copy, have your doctor fill it in & fax it to the clinic using the number provided. Referrals are prioritized according to the acuity, which is gathered from the information we obtain on and with the referral. There is a waiting list, which is variable in length but usually lengthy.

You can also refer yourself to the Arthritis Society and their services are also covered under OHIP. A private physiotherapy clinic is also an option. You can refer yourself, however, you will need to pay for your visits through extended health benefits or on your own. Often the waiting list is very low in a private clinic and therefore, services can be accessed much more quickly.

Q: I have been having more pain in my knees in the past few weeks. My friend has had ultrasound on her knee, which really helped her. I have been having a great deal of knee pain in the past few weeks. Do you think that ultrasound would help me?

A: Ultrasound may be of benefit, however, you will need to be assessed by a physiotherapist to determine what the source of increased pain may be and then will work with you to develop an appropriate treatment plan. You will need a physiotherapy referral if your physiotherapist has discharged you from treatment. This can be obtained from your family physician or your specialist.
