Frequently Asked Questions: Splints

Q: How can I clean my splint?
A: You can simply clean your splint with soap and mild water. Make sure that the water is not too hot as it will melt the splint. If you have some stains on your splint (e.g. ink) you may use chlorine bleach. Make sure that your splint is dry before putting it back on. Please refer to our Splint Wear and Care Instruction Sheet.

Q: My splint has been causing red marks by my thumb. What should I do?
A: You should call your occupational therapist as soon as possible to get your splint adjusted. You splint should not be causing any red marks or skin break down. If it does, it is not fitting properly.

Q: I have resting splints for my hands. When should I wear them?
A: Resting splints for your entire hand are to be worn at night. They will help support your joints in a proper position while you sleep. You may also wear them during the day if you are resting and your hands need support secondary to pain, inflammation and/or swelling.
