Sprains

A sprain occurs when 1 or more ligaments is stretched or torn. In more severe injuries the ligament can be torn from its attachment to the bone. These injuries are almost always painful. They can often develop into a chronic problem because the ligament is stretched to a length longer than normal which increases the joint's laxity making the joint unstable. If treated quickly and properly though the ligament should heal well and allow a safe and early return to activity. The severity of the injury will dictate how long it will take before return to full activity.
The most commonly sprained joint is the ankle.
The treatment depends on the severity and presence of associated injuries. Treatment should be individualized and progressed by your physiotherapist. Initially, treatment is aimed at protecting the joint from further injury, and then restoring movement, strength and function.

Strains

A muscle strain occurs when muscle fibres are pulled apart during a strenuous activity such as jumping or all-out sprinting or because of overuse of a particular muscle. The severity of the injury can vary from minor bruising to a complete tear.
The most commonly strained muscle is the hamstring and quadricep.
The treatment should be individualized and progress monitored regularly by a physiotherapist. Treatment will include protecting the muscle from further injury, rest and icing initially. This is followed by restoring strength and function by stretching and strengthening exercises and finally return to exercise and sport.
