COMMUNITY HYDROTHERAPY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This community based hydrotherapy program was launched to meet the needs of people in the community requiring a warm water pool in which to exercise. There is a therapy pool that is accessed through physiotherapy services at the hospital. The pool itself was designed with patient input. The temperature of the pool is 94° and the pool consists of 4 levels. The pool is accessed by stairs and is equipped with a railing around the edges as well as a railing in the middle of the pool in order to access the available space in the centre of the pool.

Exercise in warm water has been found to be especially beneficial for those with Arthritis. This population is very sensitive to the temperature of the water and often cannot participate in other community pool programs, as they are often too cold. However, this population requires ongoing exercise to maintain their ability to function. This need cannot be met through therapy-funded programs but rather community based programs.

The program will be set up with both free time as well as structured classes. There will be a qualified lifeguard on duty at all times during the program.

People will need to obtain a medical release prior to accessing the program.

People utilizing the facility are required to bring their own towel and drink, utilize the facility during the time outlined and notify the person in charge of any change in medical status.

As this is a new initiative, it will be reviewed in 6 months to ensure it is meeting the needs of the population.
