Complex Continuing Care: Information for Patients, Families and Visitors

Complex Continuing Care patientWe know that coming to the hospital can be overwhelming. This information will answer some common questions that you and your loved one might have.

Things to bring
You can dress every day in your own clothing. We suggest at least 5 changes. Please have items sent for labeling as soon as you arrive. Laundry can be done by the hospital, or by family, having it labeled prevents any accidental loss. Suggested clothing/toiletries:

  • Track suits or slip on pants
  • Briefs or boxers
  • Zippered/buttoned sweaters and coats
  • Comfortable and supportive shoes
  • Toothbrush/paste
  • Deodorant
  • Tissues
  • Comb/brush
  • Razor/shaving cream
  • Make-up
  • Eyeglasses if needed
  • Hearing aids if needed
  • Books
  • Clock/radio
  • Favorite pillow or comforter
  • Some family or pet photos

What not to bring

  • Latex products including balloons and Poinsettia plants
  • Furniture
  • Anything scented as Parkwood Institute is a scent free environment

Television and telephone
Details regarding rental charges and installations can be obtained either from the wall kiosk, directly from the office on the main floor, or extension 42625 for the television. TV’s are available in both lounges. The phone must be paid for at the cashier, then the unit secretary can call for it to be hooked up.

Internet is available upon request. Please contact the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for details.

Valuables and Cash
St. Joseph's Health Care London cannot be responsible for any cash or valuables left in your room. You can deposit money into an account with the cashier, and use it for purchases in the general store, or have your phone or tv paid monthly. You may also withdraw from this account during specific hours Monday to Friday. There is also an ATM cash machine situated in the lobby of the Main Building. Purchases such as magazines, sundries, snacks and gift items may be purchased in either of the gift shops.

Leave of absence
You may ask for leave of absence during your stay. You will receive education regarding your care needs to ensure a successful outing.

Gifts of food
Please check with nursing staff before bringing food, as the patient may be on restrictions with their diet, or have swallowing issues.

Parkwood Institute is a smoke free environment. This means no smoking anywhere on Parkwood Institute property including parking lots and the parking garage. Thank you for helping us support those we serve by creating a healthier community. Those who wish to smoke must do so off Parkwood Institute's property.

The visitor parking lot is at the front of the Main Building (Parking Lot #1). It is a daily fee of $4. A pre-paid monthly parking pass may be obtained from the parking office located on the main floor of the parking garage. The No.6 Richmond Street bus stops at the front entrance of the Main Building.

Visiting hours
Visiting hours are 11 am to 8 pm daily. Staff need to be made aware if adjustments are needed for special reasons.
