At Parkwood Institute, we are blessed with three chapels that serve the community as prayer sanctuaries. The Chapel of the Good Shepherd, located in the Western Counties Wing, offers a warm and inviting sacred space for people to gather for communal worship or individual reflection and prayer. It boasts rich and warm colours as well as some beautiful stained-glass artwork, and is often used for funerals, weddings and other services. This chapel is Christian in its design, but there is an ongoing effort to make it more conducive to multi-faith celebrations.
The fifth floor of Parkwood Institute's Main Building houses the second chapel, known as the Parkwood Chapel. This sacred space is designed and decorated to affirm the beauty and wonder of life. An arc of windows allows natural light to flood the room, giving people a beautiful view of the sky as well as the gardens below where patients, staff and visitors can relax amidst green grass, stately trees, walking paths, bird feeders, and fountains. Within the chapel are numerous plants and flowers that create a genuine oasis of serenity in the midst of a busy hospital. There are regular services held in this chapel too. And though it is also Christian in its design, there are plans to renovate so as to create a permanent multi-faith sanctuary.
The third chapel, the Chapel of Hope, is located in the Mental Health Care Building on the ground floor. The chapel and multi-faith prayer room are open 24/7 and patients, staff, and volunteers are welcome to use the space for personal reflection or prayers, and to walk the labyrinth in the prayer room floor. Also there are weekly opportunities available to attend ecumenical services and Roman Catholic communion and guided meditation. Smudging is also available upon request within the multi-faith prayer room.
- Roman Catholic Mass celebrated each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd (Level 2 Western Counties Wing)
There are a variety of services available to residents, patients, staff and visitors throughout the year at Parkwood lnstitute. In addition to Roman Catholic mass celebrated every Sunday, community congregations take their turn leading ecumenical services in the Parkwood Auditorium. One well known tradition, established for over thirty years, is the Hymn Sing; this musical program of hymns and inspirational songs is led by volunteers in collaboration with the Spiritual Care department.
There are also special services celebrated throughout the year such as Memorial Services, Celebration of Life services, World Day of Prayer, Lent, Easter, Advent and Christmas. The Sacrament of the Sick is available upon request either individually or communally. The Spiritual Care staff help facilitate the celebration of rituals and worship from a variety of faith backgrounds upon request.
Qualified chaplains work in a multitude of ways. They offer spiritual care to patients and families during hospitalization and residency, staff support, serve as advocates for patients and residents and serve as a link between the hospital and local faith communities.
