This 15 bed inpatient rehabilitation unit is specifically designed for individuals who have had a spinal cord injury either traumatic such as a from a motor vehicle collision or fall; or non-traumatic such as from a spinal abscess or infarct; patients with a peripheral nerve disorder such as Guillain Barre Syndrome are also admitted.
The SCI program is open to persons 16 years of age and older who reside within the South West and Erie St. Clair LHIN boundaries. (Residents from other area or adolescents < 16 years of age will be considered on a case by case basis. The length of stay (LOS) varies and is determined on an individual basis.
Spinal cord injured patients followed by Parkwood Hospital's outpatient department may be admitted due to unresolved medical problems, to facilitate investigations, re-assessments, education, crisis intervention and to facilitate post-operative care in specific patient situations where this has been negotiated prior to surgery.
Admission Criteria for Spinal Cord Injury
- Diagnosis of spinal cord injury (traumatic or non-traumatic)
- Requires five days per week of intensive, specialized rehabilitation using an interdisciplinary team approach
- The Spinal Cord Injury Unit is a latex free environment
