More than 50 community and business organizations are coming together to support an initiative that promotes healthy aging in London and Middlesex. Good news indeed for the estimated 28 per cent of Londoners aged 55 and older:
The initiative, called Stepping out safely – healthy aging 2012, is offering over 100 events and activities over a six month period to help older adults learn ways to stay healthy and prevent disease so they can maintain a good quality of life as they age. Each month has a theme including celebrating aging, safety, physical activity and nutrition.
Stepping out safely – healthy aging 2012 launches on April 14 at Rexpo – an annual recreation and leisure fair for older adults. The event will feature a host of activities to promote healthy living. Participants will receive passports to track their participation in the 100 activities that promote a healthy lifestyle, calendars of the exciting events spanning the next six months, food, fun and giveaways.
Mayor Joe Fontana believes active living and a healthy lifestyle are a perfect fit for all ages, including seniors. He says, “As we age we must remember that taking care of ourselves and staying active mentally and physically are important at all stages of our lives. London was the first Canadian municipality to earn the Age-Friendly City designation from the World Health Organization. Events like this are what sets London apart, and provides our seniors with the tools they need to ensure quality of life.”
The organizations supporting Stepping out safely – healthy aging 2012 include the City of London, Council for London Seniors, Horton Street Seniors Centre, Middlesex-London Health Unit, Osteoporosis Canada, and Third Age Outreach of St. Joseph’s Health Care London.
The event launch opens with an official welcome and greetings from: Dale Henderson, Councillor, City of London; Wally Adams, Director, Environmental Health and Chronic Disease Prevention Services, Middlesex-London Health Unit; Elaine Gibson, Vice President Complex, Specialty Aging & Rehabilitative Care, St. Joseph’s Health Care London; and Pam Simmons, Chair, Council for London Seniors.
Members of the media are invited to attend the Stepping out safely – healthy aging 2012 launch, and the wide range of events in the months to come.
