With recognition for high levels of patient safety, strengths in medication safety, work on reducing hospital acquired infections and commendations on an enthusiastic and loyal workforce, St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s) has been awarded Accreditation with Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada.
Accreditation Canada provides four different levels of awards; no accreditation, accreditation, accreditation with commendation, and the highest recognition - accreditation with exemplary standing. As noted by Accreditation Canada, a decision of “Accredited with Exemplary Standing” means an organization has attained the highest level of performance and quality in achieving the majority of required elements in the accreditation program.
Organizations are evaluated based on their performance against many national standards of excellence and required organizational practices for quality and patient safety. Accreditation surveyors spend close to a week onsite at an organization, reviewing documentation and performance data, observing care processes, interviewing patients, families, staff, physicians, and community partners.
During our review, Accreditation Canada surveyors highlighted our commitment to the care we provide on a day-to-day basis and the compassionate and supportive culture of St. Joseph's. They were impressed with our well-developed integrated ethics program and evidence of quality improvement in several areas such as falls prevention and access and flow in clinical programs.
“This outstanding achievement illustrates our commitment to quality and excellence across all aspects of the care we provide. We are so proud of the emphasis our staff and physicians put on patient safety and quality in their every day practice,” says Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, St. Joseph’s President and CEO.
At St. Joseph’s, the focus on quality and patient safety is a continuous process in support of our mission and the quest to realize our vision to earn complete confidence in the care we provide to those we serve. We look forward to working together to once again achieve Exemplary Standing in 2014.

Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization which provides national and international health care organizations with an external peer review process to assess and improve the services they provide to their patients and clients based on standards of excellence. Health care organizations that participate in Accreditation Canada’s accreditation programs are evaluating their performance against national standards of excellence. These standards examine all aspects of health care, from patient safety and ethics, to staff training and partnering with the community. Health care staff devote time and resources to learn how to improve what they are doing so they can provide the best possible care and service to their patients and clients.
