Wheelchairs are absolutely critical for the rehabilitation and recovery of patients and residents at Parkwood Institute. Wheelchairs enable patients and residents to navigate their environment, maintain independence and enjoy the best quality of life. Virtually every patient and resident at Parkwood Institute’s Main Building requires use of a wheelchair, and often one with customized features suited to their unique physical needs.

But the inventory of wheelchairs has become worn from daily use. More than 100 wheelchairs urgently need to be replaced at an average cost of $5,000 each. That’s where the community and the annual Season of Celebration campaign can help. Every donation made to St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation’s annual Season of Celebration campaign helps raise critical funds for patients and residents. This year’s goal is to raise $500,000 for specialized care and comfort items, such as new wheelchairs.

For the next six weeks pink lights will adorn the trees outside St. Joseph’s care-giving sites to mark the 27th annual Season of Celebration, a campaign that officially launched on National Philanthropy Day. Donations made in honour, or in memory, of a loved one lights a pink Light of Caring to symbolize the community’s compassion and support for those in hospital. The lights create a warm, seasonal display for patients and residents who can’t go home over the holiday season.

The community is invited to show its support and make a gift to the campaign in time for Christmas. To learn more visit www.seasonofcelebration.com or call 519 646-6085.

“A giving community has made so much possible beyond the limits of public funding,” says Michelle Campbell, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation. “We are counting on the community to help with the wheelchair project through this year’s campaign, while at the same time, honouring a loved one or friend for the holidays. ”
