“Rock the Parkwood” brings music to hospital-bound patients
London, Ontario – Complex medical and mental health needs can often limit the lives of patients who reside in hospitals but St. Joseph’s Health Care London music therapist, Jill Kennedy-Tufts and therapeutic recreation specialist Judy Beitz are lifting the limits on patients by organizing an afternoon of live rock music.
“This event provides patients with an opportunity to feel like they are away from the hospital setting,” says Kennedy-Tufts. “It’s an important part of recovery for people, and can help them feel a sense of independence and inclusion in activities people outside of hospitals typically participate in.”
The special event, on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Parkwood Institute, is open to all St. Joseph’s patients, families and caregivers. Back again this year to donate their talents, The Mongrels, will play a collection of songs from 60's, 70's and 80's covering artists such as Elvis Costello, Neil Young, the Beatles, the Kinks and more.
“We’re thrilled The Mongrels have returned for Rock the Parkwood. The patients loved them last time creating some big smiles and lots of toe-tapping,” says Kennedy-Tufts.
