Sharing diabetes expertise with the world
A new and expansive online resource for people living with diabetes has been created by an industrious team in St. Joseph’s Diabetes Education Centre (DEC).
The DEC’s webpages on the St. Joseph’s public website now house a wide range of practical and reliable patient information in a user-friendly format to help individuals manage their diabetes.
“As a centre of excellence regionally, nationally and internationally, we wanted to create something substantial yet easy to navigate that allows people to find very specific information quickly,” explains Maureen Loft, Nurse Practitioner in the Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. “When patients come to the DEC, there is a lot to learn and it can be overwhelming. The DEC website is now an extension of the services we provide by giving our patients, the general public and professionals access to information specific to their needs.”
Maureen worked with diabetes educators Mary Biro, Valerie Lammers and Lisa Jorgensen to expand the DEC website. For the public, the easy-to-understand information covers living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes and pre-diabetes, helping people to understand the conditions and how they are managed and treated. All the information is also available in printer-friendly handouts.
"Self-management education, which includes education about diabetes, the skills required to manage it, coping and problem solving skills, has been shown to improve blood sugar control and enhance patient's quality of life,” says Maureen. “This website is a great resource to help people self-manage.”
The DEC information “really shows the potential of what we can offer through our website,” says Web Producer Andrew Kaszowski. “Since St. Joseph’s new public website was launched a year ago, our audience has grown 300 per cent. The expanded DEC site is a perfect example of how we can share our expertise worldwide.”
