Keeping the spotlight on mental health: TD invests in the health of the community

Feb. 02, 2012

The recent opening of a new TD Canada Trust branch brought with it positive news for the health and well-being of the community. At the branch grand opening, Carolyn Gallacher, branch manager and Brian Elliot, district vice president announced a donation of $150,000 in support of St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s specialized mental health programs.

Through this gift, TD has added its corporate voice to the national conversation about mental health. With one in five Canadians living with a mental illness, investments such as this one from TD help to reduce stigma, raise awareness and support critical patient care.

“The opening of our new branch and partnership with St. Joseph’s Health Care London demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the London community. Our hope is that this donation combined with the support and effort of St. Joseph’s, will provide patient care that focused on the ability of each individual,” says Brian Elliot, district vice president, TD Canada Trust.

St. Joseph’s provides specialized mental health services to adolescents and adults of all ages who experience severe and persistent mental illness through St. Joseph’s Regional Mental Health Care (RMHC) hospitals located in London and St. Thomas.

With a new vision of mental health care in Southwestern Ontario, St. Joseph’s approach is one that respects the uniqueness of each individual while assisting patients in their journey beyond the limitations of their illness. It is a vision of mental health care that includes an innovative, positive, culturally-sensitive and compassionate care environment that enables those with serious mental illness to live the very best life possible.

To fully achieve this vision, St. Joseph’s is creating two new specialized mental health care hospitals in London and St. Thomas that express in bricks and mortar the recovery-based approach so important for hope and rehabilitation.

“We are extremely grateful to TD for this leadership gift,” says Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, president and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Care London. “Their contribution will fund patient care equipment and furnishings to provide the best care for our adolescent patient population. It will also make an important statement in this community and across the region about critical importance of philanthropic support of mental health.”
