Kitchener man wins hospitals’ Dream Lottery

Jun. 21, 2012

Russ Wilton of Kitchener has won the Dream Lottery’s Ultimate Dream Grand Prize with ticket number 043833. The draw was made by Debbie Comuzzi, President and CEO of Children’s Health Foundation yesterday at the Dream home located at 2338 Sawgrass Link.

Michelle Campbell, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation, and Dan Ross, President and CEO of London Health Sciences Foundation were also on hand for the draw, which was carried live on the 6 p.m. CTV2 London News and streamed on

The three hospital foundations share in the lottery’s revenue which is expected to top $1.1 million (net) this year, whichis in addition to the more than $20.5 million (net) raised in the 17 previous Dream Lottery draws.

This year, at the sales deadline, there was a record 139,482 tickets sold, plus an additional 7,500 given away as prizes. Wilton won on a ticket purchased as part of a 25 pack. Lottery officials were initially unable to reach Wilton, who was working at the time of the draw. His initial reaction was disbelief.

After absorbing the news of his win, Wilton was faced with a decision to choose between a fully furnished, professionally decorated Dream Home in London built by Bridlewood Homes and decorated by Gielen Design with $200,000 cash; or a fully furnished, professionally decorated Dream Home in Grand Bend built by Nicholson Builders and decorated by Exeter Home Furniture with $400,000 cash; or $1,000,000 all in cash.

Some past winners have taken up to a week to decide, others knew right away the option that they were going to take. After some deliberation last night, Wilton chose the cash. He will travel to London within the next couple of weeks to receive his cheque.

"Dream Lottery is about making dreams come true, not only for winners like Russ Wilton but for all who live and receive care at St. Joseph's Health Care London. Every year the community comes out and supports this lottery, making it possible to continue to advance the care and world-renowned research - and for this we are so very grateful." Michelle Campbell, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation

“We are thrilled to congratulate Russ Wilton and to thank each and every person who supported their hospitals through Dream Lottery. Thanks to the incredible support of the community and the region, the real winners are the children and their families who will benefit from the specialized health care and research at Children’s that Dream Lottery helps to provide each year.” Debbie Comuzzi, President and CEO, Children’s Health Foundation

“Thanks to the generosity of Londoners and supporters throughout Southwestern Ontario, a record number of Dream Lottery tickets were sold this year, creating many winners; including the patients and families from across our region and beyond who will benefit from the extraordinary care, research, innovation and education that Dream Lottery supports at our hospitals in London.” Dan Ross, President and CEO, London Health Sciences Foundation
