What do a Bible, stethoscope, newspaper, brick and scarf have in common?

At first glance these items may seem unrelated, but they are some of the symbolic gifts presented to Dr. Gillian Kernaghan at her missioning service Nov. 23 that represent the scope of her responsibilities as St. Joseph’s new president and CEO.

During the missioning service, the traditional exchange of commitments saw staff, physicians and volunteers pledge to support Gillian by committing themselves to the St. Joseph’s healing mission.  Gillian, in turn, committed to upholding St. Joseph’s mission, vision and values as a Catholic health care organization founded on the principles of service and outreach, care for the dignity of all persons, compassion and excellence.

“I feel privileged to have the opportunity to be a leader in an organization that is very clear in its mission of healing,” said Gillian during the service. “St. Joseph’s is an organization where the patient needs to be at the centre of what we do .Giving not only of our technical ability, but giving of ourselves and of our hearts to people is a mark of St. Joseph’s.”

Other elements of the missioning service included an inspiring reflection by Sister Joan Atkinson, performances by the St. Joseph’s choir, prayers and scripture readings as the St. Joseph’s community came together to bless and support Gillian as she begins her journey as St. Joseph’s president and CEO.
