The heritage chapel reopens on June 11 after three years of safe-keeping during construction at St. Joseph’s Hospital
The historic St. Joseph’s Hospital Chapel, which marks 100 years in 2015, will reopen on June 11 after three years of being closed for safe-keeping during construction of the new wing and accessible entrance at Grosvenor and Richmond Streets.
The majestic chapel – a London heritage site and the cornerstone of St. Joseph’s Hospital – has been refurbished to its original glory yet with modern technology that will bring it well into the future.
When St. Joseph’s Hospital first opened in 1888, the first priority of the founding Sisters of St. Joseph was to set up a chapel, finding a little nook over the side porch for prayer and reflection. Over the next 127 years, the chapel would move and grow in size and grandeur as the hospital expanded and evolved. Today’s chapel, with its Renaissance style and Romanesque design, is a hidden gem in London. It was built in 1915 when a new wing was added to the hospital. Ever since, this sacred space, with its serene beauty, has been a place of peace and solitude for people of many faiths and the setting of countless celebrations and rituals.
For St. Joseph’s Hospital, the chapel represents the continuity of the St. Joseph’s mission. “It speaks to the importance of faith in the journey of healing and in the resilience needed by care providers,” says Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s.
Media are invited to attend another milestone moment in the historic chapel – a special ceremony and blessing led by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Dabrowski to celebrate its place in history and its reopening:
The blessing will be followed by the St. Joseph’s Health Care Society Annual Meeting of the Members during which St. Joseph’s annual results will be shared the St. Joseph’s Health Care Society –owners and sponsors of St. Joseph’s Health Care London – and the community. The media is welcome to attend this event as well, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in the Shuttleworth Auditorium at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Zone D, Level 0, Room D0-104
