St. Joseph’s urologists share knowledge in China: London patients may benefit from research gathered

Apr. 18, 2012

Live on screen, London surgeons shared their surgical expertise across China and came home with new knowledge of surgeries rarely seen in North America.

St. Joseph’s Health Care London urologists Drs. John Denstedt and Stephen Pautler delivered lectures and live surgeries, a complex stone case and a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for a kidney cancer, at a recent forum held by West China Hospital in Chengdu, China. The surgeries were viewed by over 250 urologists from Sichuan province and broadcast around the country.

This opportunity, part of a partnership between Western University and Sichuan University in Chengdu involves knowledge exchange, professional training opportunities, and a newly developed dual degree program between the two institutions.

“Because of China’s higher population they often have a mass volume of specific cases. When we apply our expertise to help treat these groups of patients both sides gain knowledge on a larger scale then we could with the one or two cases of the same condition we would see here,” says Dr. Denstedt. “Participating in this program profiles St. Joseph’s, London, Western and Canada’s commitment to an agreement made between Health Canada and China’s Ministry of Health to facilitate the exchange of learning, best practice information and networking opportunities. Personally and professionally it’s rewarding because you can see where you are making a difference. Helping to train those 250 surgeons can translate to care for 100 million people in Sichuan Province alone. It’s an amazing ripple effect.”

“The Chinese government has made significant investments into access to care for rural areas. We have the expertise and can broadcast teaching to these remote areas to aid this process,” adds Dr. Pautler.

During their visit Drs. Denstedt in his role as the chair/chief of the Department of Surgery of Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University and Pautler, an associate professor at Western went to the Canadian Embassy in Beijing and met health ministry officials to discuss work being done between Western and Sichuan University.
