Peripheral Nerve Symposium
9th Annual Canadian Peripheral Nerve Symposium will be held at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre on Friday, October 24th, 2025.
Symposium Topics
- The Role of “Unconventional” Donors in Severe Brachial Plexus Injuries: Why do our colleagues in Asia and Europe obtain good results with donors such as contralateral C7 or phrenic nerve while these are avoided in North America? Johnny Lu from Taiwan will update us on their experience and how these donors produce reliable results at Chang Gung. Very exciting!
- Update on Surgical and Rehabilitation Treatment of Spasticity and Upper Motor Neuron Injuries: Drs Kitty Wu (Mayo Clinic) and Christopher Doherty (UBC) will provide us with key updates on the use of hyperselective neurectomy as well as the use of nerve transfers in the spastic extremity. Dr Omar Khan (PMR) will highlight the role of Ultrasound in chemodenervation treatment.
- Peripheral Nerve Surgery: Unlocking a Paradigm Shift to Shape the Future of Neurology: Dr Matthew Wilcox (Translational Research Unit at the UCL Centre for Nerve Engineering, London, UK) will tell us how peripheral nerve surgery serves as a useful model for studying nerve degeneration and regeneration more broadly to bridge across to conditions like peripheral neuropathy and other neuromuscular diseases.
- Novel Quantitative EMG techniques in nerve injury and nerve transfer surgery: Dr Ross Mandeville, Neurology, Harvard Medical School) the use of novel quantitative EMG as a planning tool for peripheral nerve reconstruction.
- DREZ Lesioning in Brachial Plexus Injuries and Root Avulsion Pain: Indications, Techniques and When to Refer: Dr Keith MacDougall ( Neurosurgery, Western University). Neuropathic pain after brachial plexus injury remains one of our most challenging clinical problems. Dr MacDougall will give us an update on this important neurosurgical intervention.
- Update on Hereditary Peripheral Neuropathies: What are the latest updates on the genetics and pathophysiology of hereditary neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth? Is there a role for peripheral nerve surgery such as nerve transfers in these conditions? Do tendon transfers maintain their efficacy over time? A multi-disciplinary panel will review these important questions.
- New Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics: Stephen Kemp, PhD (Division of Plastic Surgery, University of Michigan) will give us an update on this exciting field from one of the leading research labs from around the world.
- How Shoulder and Scapular Kinematics May Contribute to Distal Nerve Compression: Lorna Khan (BSPT, CHT hand therapist, Washington University School of Medicine) will talk to us about the important role proximal kinematics plays in “downstream” nerve compression.
- Nerve Injury and Electrical Stimulation: Dr Ming Chan (U of Alberta) will highlight the results of perioperative stimulation in a severe axonal loss injury model.
- Many other sessions on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of peripheral nerve injuries.
