Surgical Specialties
Every patient who has visited the renowned Roth|McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre at St. Joseph’s has benefited from research performed at Lawson Research Institute.
Each sight-saving consultation and surgical procedure at the Ivey Eye Institute has been informed by rigorous inquiry and discovery.
Behind the scenes of every breast-care and urology procedure is a team of researchers whose curiosity, innovation and robust trials are setting global standards of excellence.
While the surgical research specialties at St. Joseph’s span a range of human health conditions, they hold in common a drive to translate their findings to better patient health.
They examine new surgical procedures, techniques, devices and medications. They initiate and evaluate clinical trials that inform surgical education and improve surgical practices around the world.

Aging
At Lawson’s hub of research into aging and neurogenerative diseases, we weave together world-changing science with clinical practice.
Our determined team of experts seeks to help people live better and more independently throughout their lifespans, and to halt the rising toll that dementia is taking on Canadians.
It’s why we’re national and global leaders in:
- Seeking earlier, faster ways to diagnose and predict dementia and related neurodegenerative diseases through innovative biomarker tests and advanced brain imaging
- Leading rigorous trials of new medications that could delay or halt – or potentially even reverse – cognitive impairment
- Understanding the link between cognition and mobility, osteoporosis and bone health, falls and frailty,
- Helping translate our findings to patients, caregivers, clinicians and allied health professionals.
Our half-century legacy of groundbreaking research is bolstered by major, multi-year grants from national funding agencies and philanthropists, who recognize the depth of our expertise and the breadth of our partnerships.

Imaging
Lawson is in the international forefront of medical imaging
Research that takes a deep look inside the human body and seeks to understand how tissues, bones, organs and cells work, and then guides next steps when the body doesn’t work as it should.
At Lawson, we see things more clearly than anyone.
Lawson leads medical and imaging research. Learn more:
We’re home to a host of Canadian and world firsts that have resulted in new pathways of diagnosis, treatment and care.
We’re recognized as pioneers in molecular imaging: a virtual alphabet of MRIs, PET scans, CT scans and more.
With technologies that also include our state-of-the-art cyclotron, we keep pushing the boundaries of these technologies so that soon we hope to test treatments with the same pinpoint precision and technology we use for imaging. This is a new and exciting field called theranostics, and it offers the very real possibility of a magic bullet to eradicate some cancers.
Our award-winning scientists, trainees and staff share their discoveries to improve patient lives locally and around the world.
