The BrainEx 90 group is a treatment program for people experiencing symptoms after a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. The group is led by occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Patients attend once per week for this treatment, for 16 weeks (16 sessions total). BrainEx 90 involves exercises for different skills such as: self-management, vision rehabilitation, vestibular (inner ear and brain) rehabilitation, balance and core stability, cardio, cognitive rehabilitation and rest. The exercises are set up in a circuit training style format. The group also participates in discussions on topics relevant to brain injury, recovery and strategies. There are a maximum of seven patients in each group.
Survivor and Family Education Series
View information about the 2018 session.
The seven-week series Survivor and Family Education series presented by brain injury professionals at Parkwood Institute covers topics for people recovering from an acquired brain injury, their families, friends and caregivers. You do not have to be a client of Parkwood Institute to attend. The series provides participants an opportunity to share information, meet other individuals and family members affected by brain injury and gain peer support. Sessions are broadcast in a webinar format to communities across Ontario. The series runs once a week on Tuesday evenings in the Spring of each year.
Psychosocial Support Group
This treatment group is for individuals who have been referred to the ABI Outpatient Program and are having difficulty coping with changes and with relationships at home and in the workplace. This group provides peer support, information and coping strategies. The group is run by a social worker and a past program participant. This program will not be beneficial to those with significant psychosocial issues.
Return to School Group
This treatment group is designed to meet the specific needs of students with mild traumatic brain injury/concussion who are intending to return or have already returned to school. This group is run by our team’s Speech Language Pathologists, who created the programming. The goal of this treatment group is to provide opportunities to enhance the understanding of the effects or brain injuries in an effort to facilitate mild brain injuries self-management. Students learn specific strategies to address issues in reading, written expression, study skills, memory/new learning, verbal skills, social skills, as well as exploring technology options for returning to school. These strategies and skills are taught in a group setting that runs for seven sessions (once weekly) and attendance for all sessions is mandatory. This group treatment program is available to those who have been referred to the ABI Outpatient Program. Return to School – Supports & Strategies
The Return to School (RTS) treatment-based program is giving young adult students with mild brain injuries, such as concussions, the skills to successfully return to high school, college or university. Students participating in the RTS group are engaged in cognitive-communication assessment/screening with a speech-language pathologist prior to attending the group to identify specific areas of focus. Read stories about two of our students.
