A diabetes expert helps patients manage their diet with an information session at the Diabetes Education Centre.

St. Joseph’s Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism is the primary regional centre for diabetes and endocrine disease management in Southwestern Ontario.

The centre brings together comprehensive diabetes education, leading-edge care and research, and an expert team of care providers and researchers. While our researchers focus on innovation and discovery, our interdisciplinary team of care providers and educators work to support our patients' goals and health care needs, providing a continuum of services to ensure optimal health and quality of life.

Four main components

There are four main components to the Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism:

Diabetes Education Centre

Good management of diabetes starts with learning the skills you can use to make healthy food choices, increase your physical activity, control your blood sugars, and stay motivated. The Diabetes Education Centre helps you with these necessary skills.

Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinic

The diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism clinics provide patients with a range of specialized assessment and care for: diabetes mellitus; general endocrine disorders; lipid disorders; pituitary/adrenal/gonadal disorders; thyroid cancer; and pregnancy and endocrine disorders.

Primary Care Diabetes Support Program

Located at the St. Joseph’s Family Medical and Dental Centre, the Primary Care Diabetes Support Program provides diabetes care, support and education for those without a family doctor or who live with various challenges that make managing diabetes more difficult, such economic hardship, language barriers, social isolation, addictions or mental illness.

Research and teaching

A wide range of leading-edge clinical trials and scientific research is underway in London by diabetes and endocrinology researchers, who enjoy a unique working partnership with St. Joseph's care providers. 

The home base for diabetes clinical trials is St. Joseph's Hospital. The Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism is a also a teaching program for the next generation of specialists.

A wide range of leading-edge clinical trials and scientific research is underway in London by diabetes and endocrinology researchers, who enjoy a unique working partnership with St. Joseph's care providers. The home base for diabetes clinical trials is St. Joseph's Hospital, where research space is located adjacent to the Diabetes Education Centre and clinic area, providing a fertile ground for collaboration in the fight against diabetes.

Basic diabetes and endocrinology research, meanwhile, is conducted at Lawson Health Research Institute and Robarts Research Institute.

Partners

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University, provides training to undergraduate medical students and other allied health professionals.

The postgraduate education program in endocrinology and metabolism provides training for those individuals interested in an academic and/or clinical career in Endocrinology and Metabolism.
