Robotic Surgery

St. Joseph’s is a Canadian leader in minimally invasive urology surgery using the daVinci robot. The robots allows surgeons maximal precision during operations, thus extending human capability. 

More than 100 robotic surgeries are performed at St. Joseph’s each year. Through technology, St. Joseph’s continues to revolutionalize surgery procedures and attract surgery professionals from Canada and around the world to London.

General Surgery

This service is an affiliate of the Breast Care Centre.

This incorporates various surgeries related to breast cancer and incorporates state of the art imaging (mammography and breast ultrasound) and pathology.

Other General Surgery procedures include surgeries related to the gallbladder, various hernias (repair) and the lower gastrointestinal tract.

Gynecological Surgery

This service provides minimally invasive surgery for concerns related to women’s gynecologic health. This includes the use of laser, scopes, cameras and ablation equipment.

Opthalmology (Eye Surgery)

This service is an affiliate of the Ivey Eye Institute.

In our Operating Room we focus on surgery of the retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, cornea (including transplants) and other surgical eye emergencies.

Orthopedic Surgery (Hand and Upper Limb)

Orthopedics at St. Joseph’s specializes in hand, elbow and shoulder surgeries as part of the Roth McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre.

We focus on shoulder replacements (arthroplasties), fractures and scopes associated with upper limbs.

Otolaryngology (Head and Neck, Facial Plastic Surgery)

This area concentrates on surgery of the ear, nose, throat, tongue and facial regions, including cancer. Here we use new navigation technology to perform minimally invasive surgery.

Plastic Surgery

This service provides reconstructive breast surgery. We also specialize in the re-implantation of severed upper limbs and digits. Included in this is the repair of tendons and nerves of upper limbs.

This is affiliated with the Roth | McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre.

Pre-Surgical Screening Unit

The focus of the clinic is to ensure patients are safely and well-prepared for their upcoming operation and that the day of the surgery runs smoothly.

Urologic Surgery

Part of the Urology Clinic, this service includes the following: laser surgery of the bladder, ureters and kidney. We focus on minimally invasive surgery using scopes and cameras for visualization.

We also perform state of the art robotic surgery (using our da Vinci robot) of the prostate.

This area further incorporates a lithotripsy suite which uses non-invasive extracorporeal shock waves to disintegrate kidney stones without a surgical incision.

Family Guide

A family member’s guide 

What do you need to do?

Please check in with the family waiting room staff, located in Zone C on Level 1, (after your relative has gone for surgery) to let them know your plans during the surgery and recovery period. If the surgeon wishes to speak to you, they will check with the waiting room staff to find you.

You will be given a unique case number to track your loved one’s journey through the surgical process on our patient tracking system. Monitors are located in and just outside our family waiting room and outside Tim Hortons (located in Zone C, Level 0).

Once there is an update to the SDCU Post-op Bay # column on the far right of the screen, you can visit your loved one in the bay # listed in the Surgical Day Care Unit located in Zone C, Level 1.

Where can you wait?

St. Joseph’s family waiting room is located in Zone C on Level 1. There are also comfortable chairs located throughout the main lobby area in Zone C and two cafeteria areas.

Cafeteria – Café 268

Monday- Friday: 6:30 am – 2 pm

The fireside lounge within Cafe 268 is open 24/7 and has monitors to track the care journey of surgery patients. 

Tim Hortons (On The Go)

Monday-Friday: 8:00 am-5:30 pm

When can you visit?

If your family member is going home the same day as their surgery, they are allowed to have two people accompany them to the hospital but only one visitor at a time in the Surgical Day Care Unit. If the patient having surgery is under the age of 16 they may have two visitors at any time. 

If your family member is staying overnight at St. Joseph’s after their surgery they may have two visitors at a time.
