Type 2 Diabetes: FAQ

 Type 2 Diabetes FAQ

Do I need to check my blood sugars?

Yes, checking your blood sugar is the only way to know if it is in the target range. When blood sugars are high, you are at risk of developing complications such as damage to your eyes and kidneys.

If my blood sugars get better, do I still have diabetes?

If your blood sugars are managed, your diabetes is considered under control but you will still have diabetes.

Do people with Type 2 diabetes have to take insulin?

Some people with Type 2 Diabetes will need insulin to manage their blood sugars.

If I take insulin, does it mean I have Type 1 diabetes?

Not all people taking insulin have Type 1 diabetes. Some people with Type 2 diabetes need to take insulin.

Is there anything I can do to prevent or delay having to start taking insulin?

Managing your blood sugars by maintaining a healthy body weight, eating healthy, being active and taking your medications is the best way to delay or prevent taking insulin. Diabetes is a progressive disease and will likely require a change in medications, possibly insulin, along the way.
