Support Veterans Care

Sylvia O'Connell

The Veterans Care Program provides long term, complex and respite patient care in highly specialized environments to Canada’s Veterans.

Through the Operational Stress Injuries Clinic within the Program, specialized mental health outpatient services are provided to Veterans, currently serving Canadian Forces, and eligible Royal Canadian Mounted Police members who are experiencing mental health conditions as a result of their operational service. Your support of the Veterans Care Program will support care, comfort and the urgent needs of Canada’s Veterans.

Equipment and technology

Medical equipment and technology are important components to providing care. They are essential in:

  • diagnosing and treating disease;
  • guiding surgeons through complex procedures;
  • supporting patients in their recovery from illness or injury.

Equipment in Veterans Care Program includes day-to-day care and comfort needs like pressure-reducing mattresses, wheelchairs and lifts. It also includes imaging equipment like ultrasound machines, so that diagnostic testing can be performed at the Parkwood Institute rather than travelling offsite.

Medical Research

Research is at the heart of every health care advancement.

At. St. Joseph’s, we take a "bench to bedside" approach to medical research. This means taking discoveries from the laboratory and applying them in the clinic where they will directly benefit patients.

Most of the research in support of Veterans care is centred at the MacDonald Franklin OSI Research Centre at Parkwood Institute. A research team at the Centre is working to be a national and global leader in mental health research to promote the wellbeing of Veterans and their families. Research themes include:

  • treatments and outcomes;
  • resilience;
  • moral injury;
  • the development of assessment tools;
  • the impact of COVID-19; and
  • population-level health.
